Product Structured Data Documentation Updated by Google

Google added requirements that will qualify a site to display product return policies in the merchant listing experiences to the developers guide for the product structured data.

Customer Listing Experiments

The change is applicable to a collection of rich results known as the merchant listing experiences that are only available to merchants.

Experiences with merchant listings include:

1.Knowledge panel for shopping
2.Popular Items

According to Google's Merchant Listing developer page, it is as follows:

The Shopping Knowledge panel, Popular Products, as well as shopping experiences in Google Images and Google Lens, are all enhanced by merchant listing experiences.

Our Product structured data manual details the structured data needed for merchant listings and product snippets.

Structured Data Type: Merchant Return Policy

A structured data type informs search engines that the data pertains to a particular data type, in this case, the return policy of a particular retailer.

The "properties" of structured data types reveal information about the data type.

The Schema.org MerchantReturnPolicy structured data type now has support from Google.

Properties like return costs and the number of days a product can be returned are included in the MerchantReturnPolicy structured data type.

Two Essential Qualities

There are two prerequisite properties for the new MerchantReturnPolicy type.

In order to assure eligibility for the rich results relevant to MerchantReturnPolicy, required characteristics are not optional and must be present in the structured data.

The two essential qualities for structured data are as follows:

1.relevant nation
2.policy of returns Category

A country code serves as the value for the first property.

The values for the second one, returnPolicyCategory, are explained by Google as follows:

suggested qualities
Although they are optional, recommended attributes should be used when suitable in order to qualify for any associated rich results.

There are four categories of advised properties:

1.business Return Days
2.Refund Charges
3.return Formula
4.Refund Shipping Charges

A Supplement to Structured Data to Qualify for Rich Results
There is another option to qualify for the returns policy shopping experience, according to Google's new section on eligibility, without configuring the related structured data.

In the Google Merchant Centre Help, they advise adjusting the delivery options and return policies (information on how to configure it are available here).

According to Google's documentation,

"Retailer shipping rules may be complex and subject to frequent change. If you have a Google Merchant Centre account and are having problems indicating and maintaining your shipping and return details with markup, you might want to think about defining your shipping parameters and return policies there.

When retailers use both the Merchant Centre and structured data for the returns policy, Google will favour the settings in the Google Merchant Centre, just like it does with the other types of product structured data pertaining to retailer products.
